What draws us to content like The Outdoor Boys?
Lately I've been watching a lot of the YouTube Channel Outdoor Boys. Considering it has 16 million+ subscribers I'm not unique in that at all. So what appeals to us about the channel? Do we want to do what he does? Do we admire the skills he has? What's fun about surviving in uninhabitable places all alone?
I think it's about life it's at purest, simplest form. It's a man trying to eat, sleep and live in a world untouched by the artifical. My life, our lives are so full of noise in the modern world that watching a man live for a few days without any of it makes us yearn. For me it hits some base level of need; of something simple and hard where the purpose of everything is crystal clear. There's no pretense in it, just a man trying to live. I watch him make a bed on the ground and it takes two hours, and then he sleeps in it, and then he dismantles it never to be used again. The function of that two hours of work was to sleep, and once that's met the product of that work is gone, and none of that two hours feels like a waste.
It's life distilled into something unstained by civilization. To be lost in this life for a few days, and for us watching for a few minutes captivates me in a way nothing else can.
