Best of Sunnyside part II : Restaurants
Sunnyside restaurants, like the neighborhood are without pretense. They're no frills places that rely on their food to do the talking. I'll start with my favorite burger joint.
Best Burger
The Alcove
Nestled in between multiple bars on Skillman is the real gem of the beautiful street. The Alcove is quaint, has fire fries and their burger is tremendous, easily the best in the neighborhood.
Honorable mention: Bliss Bistro
Bliss burger is one of my go to takeouts. For $16 you get a delcious burger, a healthy dose of fries and a small salad.
Best Chinese
Chinese is easily my most frequently ordered takeout. It's basic junk food that always hits the spot. In my four years here I've tried so many Chinese places around Sunnyside I thought of compiling a full list of them, but Chinese is one of those takeout where you find your favorite and stick with it.
New Asian Cuisine
For me that place is New Asian Cuisine. It's a bit pricier than the others, but their fried rice is better. I'm not going to go on and on about the food quality. It's no frills Chinese. Good fried rice, crispy, juicy fried chicken wings and a solid price of $10. What more do we need?
Dumplings and Things
Cash only knocks this down a bit, and it's not a American Chinese joint that has a ton of fried stuff on the menu. Their house fried rice is huge and delicious. My favorite thing for them is the pork buns which are awesome for just $6.
Late night munchies
I sleep late, and so for me places that are open late and satisfy those late night cravings are godsends. Friday night watching a mediocre TV show while eating food truck halal with a nice cold soda is the pinnacle of freedom as a man in my opinion. Genuinely it's the most at peace I feel with myself.
B&B Halal
Yes it's right outside my apartment, and that's really the part that makes a late night munchies spot the best, but it's also much better than the other halal cart in the neighborhood, Shah's. For $11 you get a delicious mixed platter that's just the height of comfort foods.
Taste Buds Deli
I'm partial to a good chopped cheese. A Queens neighborhood can't feel like home without a 24 hour deli that offers a decent chopped cheese at 3 am in my opinion. Luckily Sunnyside has multiple. I love the Deli right downstairs but Taste Buds has a better chopped cheese.
Bakery
For the first three years of my time in Sunnyside we had no decent bakeries. Sudddenly the year I leave two have popped up that are genuinely great. Bittersweet but better late than never.
Masa Madre
Every sweet I had here was delicious. They have freshly made bread every day, the only place in the neighborhood where you can get fresh bread daily.
Kora
This place opened only a few months ago to huge fanfare, and after being there once I see why. The assortment of donuts and pastries are so unique and different and just visually every one of them look so eclectic. Was not impressed with their cookies though. Pricey place. Try the coffee Cruller it's amazing.
Sunnyside's food spots make this neighborhood feel like a home. These places and many others are lovely, unpretentious and affordable. It's been a great place to satisfy my takeout cravings.
